Lacquer jubako (stacked food box) Japan, Late Edo/Meiji Period, 19th century

The box is of square form and is composed of four layers and a cover. The cover and sides are decorated in hiramaki-e, takamaki-e and kirigane with panels in the shape of over-lapping poetry sheets with designs of chrysanthemums in stylized rivers and with pavilions in forests, each panel surrounded by a diaper designed background. The interior is decorated in nashiji lacquer.

Condition

The corners of the tiers are cracked and some have been re-glued. There are some minor losses of lacquer in other places. Otherwise the rest of the lacquer is in good condition.
