Lacquer suzuribako (writing box) Japan, Late Edo/Meiji Period, 19th century

The box of rectangular form with rounded edges. The cover decorated in hiramaki-e, takamaki-e and mother of pearl with a pair of ducks swimming in a stream, the interior with a pen tray, an ink stone and a small metal recess for a water dropper in the shape of Mount Fuji, now lacking.

17.5cm wide, 4cm high, 24cm long

Condition

The lacquer is faded to the top and sides from being in the light and it has lost its mirror black shine. There is a crack, approximately 2cm to two corners at the bottom end of the box. There is a small crack to the side at the top end of the box. The interior is lacking its water dropper. The box is otherwise in a reasonably good condition.
