Lacquer ko-bako (small box) Japan, Edo Period, 18th-19th century

The box is in the shape of a piece of fruit. The cover is decorated in gold hiramaki-e on a red ground with two cranes beside a pine tree with Mount Fuji in the background.

Dimensions

7.5cm wide, 3.3cm high, 11.5cm deep

Condition

The red lacquer has faded. The gold is considerably rubbed. The interior rim is cracked. The edges are worn with some lacquer losses.
