Six-fold screen of pine trees, after Tosa Mitsunobu Japan, 20th century

SOLD

The screen has a continuing design of pine trees painted in green, brown and black on a gold leaf ground.

Dimensions

140cm high, 50cm wide each fold, 300cm wide when extended

Condition

There is some discolouration and marks to the gold leaf. The frame is scuffed in a few places. The paper on the rear of the screen has a few minor tears, which does not affect the front of the screen. Overall it is in reasonably good condition.

Note

Tosa Mitsunobu was a master of Japanese screen painting in the Muromachi period. In the Edo period the Tosa School advocated the copying of old masters. This screen is a 20th century copy of an old master painting using traditional techniques. The original can be found in the Tokyo National Museum.
