Japanese Ceramics & Works of Art Object Details

A pair of cloisonné enamel vases, in the style of Hayashi Kodenji Japan, Meiji Period, early 20th century

SOLD

The vases are of ovoid form. They each have a design of two long tailed butterflies flying on a black ground.

Dimensions

24cm high each

Condition

One vase has been chipped in three places and restored with a black polymer resin. The other vase has minor chips in two places. There are very light marks and scratches. The butterfly design is in good condition and the damage has occurred on the rear of the vases. They are structurally in reasonably good condition.

Note

Hayashi Kodenji’s designs of butterflies are usually naturalistic. This design is more formalized with a greater degree of wirework on the cells, but still has a feeling of naturalism.
