The pot is of cylindrical form. The exterior is carved with a design of five sages beside a pavilion within a bamboo grove.
25.5cm high
There are some minor cracks to the base of the foot-rim. There are some light marks and scratches to the tan brown patina to the exterior of the bamboo. Otherwise it is in reasonably good condition.
The seven sages of the bamboo grove were Confucian scholars who turned their back on a traditional career in the government bureaucracy in order to retreat in to the wilderness and pursue a scholarly life of leisure. They became a popular symbol of defiance against the establishment.
