The bowl and saucer are each of octagonal form and decorated in famille-rose enamels and gilt with a deer in a garden setting, under a pine tree and beside flowers, rocks and fungus.
Bowl: 6.5cm wide, 4cm high. Saucer: 11cm wide
The bowl has a small nick to the rim and has some rim fritting. Otherwise it is in good condition. The saucer has a small nick to the rim and has some rim fritting. There are some small firing marks to the glaze on the well and cavetto, otherwise it is in good condition.
Deer were considered auspicious creatures in Daoist philosophy in China as it was claimed that they could find the fungus of immortality. This design was considered very auspicious as both the deer and the pine tree represent longevity of life and therefore complement each other.
