Lacquer jubako (stacked food box) Japan, late Edo / Meiji Period, 19th century

The box is of rectangular form and is composed of four layers and a cover. The cover and sides are decorated in hiramaki-e and kirigane with chrysanthemums. The interior is decorated in red lacquer.

20cm wide, 23.5cm high, 18cm deep

Condition

The corners of some of the boxes have some cracks and there are a few losses to the lacquer. The lacquer is a faded and rubbed, but otherwise in reasonably good condition.
