Of rectangular form with zig-zag vine design in the style of Kodaiji lacquer
25cm wide, 14cm high, 16cm deep
The Kodaiji temple was built in 1606 for Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Kodaiji lacquer uses a technique called katami-gawari where a design is divided by a zig-zag border. One side is decorated with gold and the other side with black lacquer. This technique derives from textiles. For examples of Kodaiji lacquer view the Florence and Herbert Irving Collection in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
