These chests were for ceremonial use by the samurai. A daimyo lord was required to visit the capital, usually annually to pay homage to the shogun. Their clothes and luggage usually had their clan crest visible on them and it was a great chance to show off their wealth. This chest would have contained the ceremonial armour of the lord of the domain or one of his important retainers. The Shimazu family was one of the wealthiest and most powerful clans.
