51.5cm wide, 33.5cm deep
There are light marks and scratches, small chips to the rim and the lacquer is a little faded.
The man with an umbrella is the famous Heian period calligrapher Ono no Michikaze. It is from a famous story that became popular in the Edo period. On a rainy day the calligrapher is thinking of giving up his work and watches a frog trying to jump up into a willow tree. On its eighth attempt it succeeds. This perseverance encouraged him to continue with his study and allowed him to become the most famous calligrapher in Japan.
