Lacquer kakeban (table-like tray for food, used on special occasions) Japan, Edo Period

The kakeban of square form with shaped rim and four ovoid shaped legs with stretchers, the top covered in red lacquer the sides with black lacquer and a hiramaki-e design of foliage with the ka-mon (clan badge) of the Tokugawa family.

20cm square, 11.5cm high

Condition

The lacquer top is faded and appears to have been used as a plant stand as there is a circular mark. The sides have small losses of lacquer in places. There are minor cracks to two of the shoulders of the legs. There are the engraved initials 'W.H.' underneath the table towards one shoulder. Otherwise the kakeban is in fair condition.
